SPK Blocks Access to PancakeSwap and 45 Other Crypto Platforms in Turkey
In a significant move to tighten oversight on the rapidly growing crypto market, the Capital Markets Board of Turkey (SPK) has issued an access ban on 46 cryptocurrency platforms, including one of the largest decentralized exchanges in the world — PancakeSwap.
This decision, published in the SPK’s bulletin dated July 3, 2025, is part of the regulator’s broader crackdown on unauthorized crypto service providers. According to the bulletin, these platforms were offering services to Turkish residents without holding a valid license from the SPK.
PancakeSwap Blocked in Turkey
Founded in 2020 on the BNB Chain, PancakeSwap has grown to become one of the most prominent decentralized exchanges (DEXs) in the DeFi space. Operating on an automated market maker (AMM) model, it allows users to swap tokens, provide liquidity, and earn yields.
With a weekly trading volume exceeding $14 billion, PancakeSwap has surpassed even Uniswap in certain metrics, cementing its place as a leader in decentralized finance.
However, as of early July 2025, Turkish users are no longer able to access the platform due to the latest SPK enforcement.
Zero Tolerance for Unlicensed Crypto Activity
In the official announcement, the SPK cited Law No. 6362 on Capital Markets as the legal basis for the ban. The regulator emphasized that these platforms were operating in Turkey without proper authorization, offering crypto asset services to residents in violation of the law.
Under the new crypto legislation, all companies wishing to provide crypto services in Turkey must obtain an operating license from the SPK.
Stricter Regulations and Severe Penalties
Turkey’s updated legal framework imposes stringent conditions on crypto service providers. Companies must be established as joint stock entities with a minimum capital of 50 million Turkish lira and must comply with licensing requirements.
Failure to comply comes with serious legal consequences. Executives of unlicensed platforms may face 3 to 5 years in prison and fines ranging from 5,000 to 10,000 judicial penalty days.
CAKE Token and PancakeSwap Services
PancakeSwap’s native token, CAKE, boasts a market capitalization of $741 million, ranking it among the most valuable cryptocurrencies globally. The platform sees an average daily trading volume of $63 million and offers a wide range of DeFi services including:
- Token swaps
- Staking
- Yield farming
- NFT trading
- Liquidity pool creation
Conclusion
This latest action by the SPK sends a strong signal that unauthorized crypto operations will no longer be tolerated in Turkey. While users are still seeking alternative ways to access decentralized platforms, the regulatory landscape is becoming increasingly strict, pushing crypto providers to either comply with local laws or exit the market.
As the Turkish crypto market matures, such measures are likely to reshape the ecosystem — favoring licensed, transparent, and locally accountable operators.
